Walking Tour of Hobbiton

Want to know the most expensive real estate in New Zealand? Ill give you a hint it’s not anywhere near Auckland, but located in Matamata and comprises of a neighborhood of Hobbit holes. The family who owns the farm the hobbit holes were built on welcomes hundreds of people each day to walk among the 44 hobbit holes, the mill, and the lake where the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies were filmed. They have done a amazing job preserving the scenery exactly the way they were filmed as well as keeping up numerous gardens throughout the paths.

Tyler and I chose one Monday to make our way to Matamata and check out Hobbiton. Ever since we landed in New Zealand it was on Tyler’s must do list and being the wonderful fiancee that I am, went along with it. I saw the Lord of the Ring’s movie and while I was happy enough to check it out, I was a little suspect I wouldn’t quite enjoy it as much as some die hard fans. Here is where I was pleasantly surprised, the grounds were absolutely beautiful and the amount of little details they put into these hobbit houses and gardens was amazing. We actually went on a rainy overcast day, I imagine the tour being even better if you are able to catch it on a sunny day as the rolling hills (and loads of sheep) would be more visible.
