Turning 30 and getting the final approval for New Zealand

Another month gone, another month closer to New Zealand! The last two weeks have been crazy busy for me and Tyler, but tons of fun! First of all I was out in Florida for a work related conference for a week, and when I got back Tyler was super sneaky and threw me a 30th birthday surprise party. I was absolutely shocked and completely surprised, especially when I saw my good friend had flown down from San Fran for the weekend… he did so good at keeping this secret for months and coordinating everything =)

The next day my family and I headed off to Laguna Beach to be beach bums for the day and to keep the celebration going, it was so much fun just to relax on a patio with a drink in hand… plus my sister got us all flower crowns to wear for the day to celebrate. Turning 30 has started off right and I have a feeling my 30’s will be a decade to remember =).

After our fun-filled (booze filled) weekend, Tyler and I with 4 other friends headed down to Baja Mexico to go surfing for the week. Los Gaviotas, around 45 minutes past the border and directly below Rosarito, is one of my favorite places in Mexico. We rented a ocean front 3 bedroom house that had a amazing patio overlooking a fun surf spot. Fortunately for us, we drove into a great swell generated by a hurricane off the coast, so our days consisted of surfing, drinking beers, eating guacamole on the patio, barbecuing, and going into the Jacuzzi. Pretty much heaven on earth for the week.

And finally, the biggest news of the week is that Tyler’s visa finally got approved and his passport is on his way back to him! He also has a passport card which is why we were able to drive across the border to Mexico, but he is pretty anxious to have his passport back in hand. One thing we found out through this process is New Zealand will not even look at the IEP Visa Application until 3 months before your intended departure date, so we actually sent his visa application in too early and had to send it back to New Zealand after it got sent back the first time…. which has delayed our timeline a bit. I am already approved for my work holiday visa (only took 48 hours to get approved, benefits of being under 30) and I have a full year to enter New Zealand from my approval date.

Whats next?

Our next two months are going to be pretty hectic…. we are going to give notice to our apartment, move out of said apartment, go on a week vacation with my family to Kauai (diving posts to follow for sure!)…. sell some of our stuff, store some more of our stuff, give some notices to some jobs, I have to go on one more work trip, then around mid to late august fly out of the US to start our journey. Did I mention the plan is to stop in Bali first before continuing on to New Zealand??

And one last note, it really bothers me how every time I write New Zealand spell check comes up on “Zealand”… wtf I think a country as cool and big as New Zealand should be recognized by spell check… already bad enough they are left off the Facebook map…..
